The Scenario
It's Friday at 3pm. Your manager's manager asks if you have a minute. HR is in the call. You've seen this movie before — maybe not for yourself, but you've seen it.
By 3:30, you're in the parking lot with a cardboard box, two weeks of severance, and COBRA paperwork you don't fully understand yet.
Your mortgage is due in 19 days. Your car insurance bill processes in 11. You have $2,400 in your checking account, $800 in savings, and about six subscriptions you've been meaning to cancel for months.
Most people freeze here. Not from ignorance — from overload. There are too many decisions and too many second-guesses hitting simultaneously. The health insurance decision alone has six options and an enrollment deadline. Do you tap savings? Do you tell your partner tonight or tomorrow? What do you cancel first?
Here's the counterintuitive truth about financial emergencies: the first 48 hours are not about money. They're about clarity. The financial situation you have is the one you have. What determines the outcome is whether you do the right 8 things in the right order over the next 48 hours — or whether you spend those 48 hours anxious-browsing LinkedIn and stress-eating.
The people who come out of sudden income disruption fastest are the ones who triage first and feel later. This week's issue is that triage list.
The Loadout
3-Month Cash Reserve in a High-Yield Savings Account
This is the gear item that isn't gear. Three months of fixed expenses (rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments, food) sitting in a separate account you don't touch. The number for most urban adults: roughly $8,000–$15,000 depending on your city. Yes, that takes time to build. The fastest path: automate $200–$400/month until you hit it, then forget it exists. The ROI on this "product" is unlimited.
Recommendation: Marcus by Goldman Sachs or Ally Bank for the HYSA (currently paying competitive APY — verify current rates). Do not use your regular checking bank.

Proton VPN (paid plan)
Awkward timing: the moment you lose your job is exactly when you're most likely to be job hunting from a coffee shop on public wifi and submitting your resume, LinkedIn credentials, and salary expectations to anyone who's packet-sniffing. A VPN isn't paranoia — it's basic hygiene for digital job searches. Proton is the one I trust: open-source, Swiss jurisdiction, audited.

A Second Bank Account at a Different Institution
When fraud hits, banks freeze your primary account. When that account is also your only account, you can't pay rent. A free checking account at a different bank or credit union — Schwab Investor Checking is the standard recommendation for fee-free ATMs — is the backup account you open when nothing is wrong so it's there when something is.

"I Got Laid Off" Financial Triage Template (free — page 2 of this issue)
Not a product, but worth more than most gear: a fill-in worksheet covering your burn rate, 60-day runway, subscription audit, COBRA deadline, and the 8 triage steps in order. Print it or copy it to a Google Doc right now, before you need it. The full template is on the next page.

One Skill: The 48-Hour Financial Triage Checklist
Do these 8 things in this order. Not all at once — one per session over two days.
Within the first 6 hours:
Write down your fixed monthly expenses: rent/mortgage, utilities, car payment, insurance minimums, phone. Total them. This is your burn rate.
Calculate your runway: (total savings + checking) ÷ burn rate = months of runway. Write the number down. Knowing it is less scary than not knowing it.
Day 1:
File for unemployment immediately. Every state has a waiting period. Starting the clock on day one costs nothing.
Don't cancel subscriptions yet. Write them all down and their amounts. Cancel after you know your runway — not from panic.
Call your health insurance marketplace or HR rep. Understand your COBRA deadline (usually 60 days from termination). You don't have to decide today.
Day 2:
Contact your landlord/lender before you're late, not after. Most have hardship programs that aren't advertised. Calling proactively buys goodwill and sometimes payment deferrals.
Notify one trusted person — partner, parent, close friend — so you're not carrying this alone. Isolation makes financial stress worse and better decisions less likely.
Give yourself one week before any major pivot. The first week is triage. Week two is strategy.
This isn't your usual everyday carry solution. EDC is based, for the most part, on preparedness, having what you need before you need it. This edition fits in that space. We all want to think we are prepared for what comes next. Our EDC loadouts generally reflect what we think lies ahead and what we need to deal with it. This is no different, and in fact is more impactful than what we keep in our backpacks or our pockets.
The Find
r/personalfinance wiki — The best free financial emergency resource that isn't from a financial institution trying to sell you something. The "I am in financial trouble" section is specific, practical, and doesn't assume you own a financial advisor. Worth bookmarking now.
Next week: the one you don't think will happen to you — until it does.
Page 2: "I Got Laid Off" Financial Triage Template
Copy this to a Google Doc or print it now — before you need it. Fill in the blanks when you're calm so you're not calculating under stress.
Part 1: Your Burn Rate
Your monthly fixed expenses — the non-negotiables that run whether you work or not.
Expense | Monthly Amount |
|---|---|
Rent / Mortgage | $ |
Utilities (electric, gas, water) | $ |
Internet / Phone | $ |
Car payment | $ |
Car insurance | $ |
Health insurance (current) | $ |
Minimum debt payments (cards, loans) | $ |
Groceries (realistic estimate) | $ |
Childcare / dependents | $ |
Other fixed: _____________ | $ |
Other fixed: _____________ | $ |
TOTAL MONTHLY BURN RATE | $ |
Part 2: Your Runway Calculation
Item | Amount |
|---|---|
Checking account balance | $ |
Savings account balance | $ |
Other liquid cash (not retirement) | $ |
Total liquid cash | $ |
Runway = Total liquid cash ÷ Monthly burn rate
$__________ ÷ $__________ = __________ months of runway
Write that number somewhere visible. Knowing it is less scary than not knowing it.
Part 3: Subscription Audit
List every recurring charge. Do not cancel yet — just know what's there.
Service | Monthly Cost | Cancel? (Y/N) |
|---|---|---|
| $ |
|
| $ |
|
| $ |
|
| $ |

| $ |

Total subscriptions | $ |

Cancel only after you know your runway. Panic-canceling everything wastes time and sometimes triggers fees.
Part 4: Insurance Decision Tracker
You have 60 days from termination to elect COBRA. You do not have to decide on day one.
Option | Monthly Premium | Deadline | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
COBRA (continue employer plan) | $ | ________ | Verify with HR |
Marketplace / ACA plan | $ | Special enrollment within 60 days | |
Spouse/partner's plan | $ | Check their open enrollment rules |
|
Short-term health plan | $ | — | Gaps in coverage — verify carefully |
COBRA election deadline: _________________________ (termination date + 60 days)
Marketplace special enrollment deadline: _________________________ (termination date + 60 days)
